I graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. I'm a member of the Alberta Law Society. My legal experience includes an internship with the Alberta Court of Appeal where I was honoured to assist various Justices of the Court. I completed my articles with the Federal Department of Justice.
Prior to private practice, I was a Refugee Protection Officer under Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. As an Officer, I made administrative decisions and recommendations under the Act. It also gave me great experience in cross and direct examination and questioning of the claimant and witnesses and providing submissions to the Presiding Member. I have experience in over 200 hearings before the Immigration and Refugee Board.
I have been interviewed on immigration matters by CityTV, Global, Calgary Herald, the Globe and Mail and the Calgary Sun. Also - a stimulating/combative interview with Dave Rutherford on CHQR770.
I have been appointed by the Benchers of the Law Society to the Continuing Professional Development Committee and the Legal Education Society of Alberta's Continuing Legal Education Committe. In addition, I am on the Legal Aid Society of Alberta's Regional Appeals Committee.
I strongly believe that lawyers need to invest time and effort in their craft - in continual skill and knowledge development.
I want the blog to be of assistance to other immigration lawyers, and welcome any feedback or comments by them. I'm still relatively new to the Bar, and am thankful to the immigration lawyers in Calgary that have taken the time to mentor me since I started practicing law.
I am currently completing my Masters in Laws (LLM) in Administrative Law at Osgoode Hall and look forward to a greater understanding of the legal principles that I regularly encounter.
