Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program – Family Stream
Family stream - candidate eligibility
An application under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) - Family requires both a Sponsor and a Candidate. The following criteria must be met for the Candidate to be considered for a nomination to become a permanent resident under this stream.
Criteria for Candidates (includes but is not limited to):
• The Candidate must have an eligible Sponsor.
• The Candidate must complete a Family - Application for Nomination (AINP 006) form.
• The Candidate must be able to provide proof that he or she is the parent, child, brother, sister, aunt,
• uncle, niece or nephew of the Sponsor (by birth or adoption).
Please note that Candidates who are currently in Canada and have been identified by Citizenship and Immigration Canada as one of the following are not eligible to apply under the Family Stream:
1. foreign nationals who are on a study permit from CIC and currently enrolled in a program of study in Canada
2. live-in-caregivers
3. refugee claimants
• The Candidate and their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must be between the ages of 21 and 45.
• The Candidate and their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must have obtained an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) minimum score of 4.0, or a minimum level of 3 (361-540) on the Test d’evaluation de français (TEF).
Language and Work Experience
If the Candidate and their spouse or common-law partner’s (if applicable) primary language of use (language most commonly used in your household) is English or French, or if he Candidate and their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) completed a minimum of a baccalaureate in English or French, an IELTS or TEF is not required with the application.
The Candidate or their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must meet minimum criteria for education and work experience. Note that one individual (either Candidate or spouse/common law partner) must meet both the education and work experience criteria.
The Candidate or their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must be able to demonstrate completion of a post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate program of at least one year in duration. The Alberta PNP reserves the right to consult with the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) in the assessment of educational credentials.
The Candidate or their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must be able to demonstrate one of the following:
1. a minimum of three years of full-time work experience within the past four years
2. a minimum of three years of full-time post-secondary school within the past four years
3. a combination of three years of full-time work experience and full-time postsecondary
4. school within the past four years
Support Funds
The Candidate or their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) or the sponsor must be able to demonstrate that they have the following accessible funds in a recognized Canadian financial institution:
• at least CAD $10,000 for the Candidate
• CAD $2,000 for each of the Candidate’s dependents (spouse or common-law partner and children)
Sponsor Criteria
Criteria for Sponsors (includes but is not limited to):
• A Sponsor must complete a Family - Sponsorship Affidavit of Support.
• A Sponsor must be at least 21 years of age or older.
• A Sponsor must be able to provide proof that he or she is the parent, child, brother, sister,
aunt, uncle, niece or nephew of the Candidate (by birth or adoption).
• A Sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and must be able
to demonstrate he or she has been a citizen or permanent resident for at least two
years.
• A Sponsor must currently be a resident of Alberta, and must be able to demonstrate that he
or she has been residing in Alberta for the past two years.
• The Sponsor must be able to demonstrate employment, private pension or other regular
source of income for the past 12 months or a minimum of CAD $15,000 in
unencumbered, transferable and available assets (jewellery, cars or other personal
assets are not considered) over and above any income received from government
transfer payments (e.g. Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan, etc.).
• A Sponsor must fulfill their sponsorship commitment prior to sponsoring another family
member. The sponsorship commitment is defined as two years from the date that the
Candidate became a permanent resident of Canada. Please note that there can only be one
ongoing sponsorship commitment per household at a time.
